Ajei recieves her inheritance (she hates it), and Doba tries his best as his daughter's birthday rolls around.
As Ajei grew up, she quickly started realizing the implications of what having a dead mother meant, for her and for her father. But it was never more apparent to her than the day she had to go to the hospital for suddenly choking on air.

In which the entire voice chat collectively went “Ohh nooooo…”.
Asthma is perfectly manageable, of course, but after Elmira passed away so soon prior, the diagnosis carried a weight that terrified poor Ajei. And it terrified Doba even more. Tough times got tougher, but at least they both had each other.

It’ll be okay.
On top of the rapidly dwindling family funds (Doba’s manual labor job wasn’t doing much for the two of them, and of course the freak fires that keep happening…) the house was broken into a few nights after Ajei’s diagnosis.

Luckily police were able to aprehend the burgular. And nothing was taken. But the shock of it all was a lot to handle amidst everything else.
But still, Ajei was alright. She was a pretty average student in school, but seemed to excel in all types of art. Her younger interest in plotting relationships and storylines between her dolls evolved into a desperate need to create; paintings, piano tunes, themed bracelets, you name it.
Doba had also managed to keep his curse on the down-low (though Elmira’s death made him get close). He’d managed to master the management of his own fury, and was able to organize tiny “vacations” for himself during full moons. He’d actually become very close friends with a fairy during these excursions, Faye Reeds, who was able to help him manage the rougher patches of his curse as he worked his way to a cure.
Something in Ajei implicitly knew the fact of her father’s curse, though. Perhaps she’d inherited it (Doba prayed to The Watcher above that she didn’t). She decided that she was a bear, and would walk around the house in a little purple bear suit.

This is who she is and no one can change that!!!
Doba just smiled and nodded and played along. Hoping it didn’t mean anything.
Time continued passing the Basilios by, and before they knew it, Ajei’s birthday rolled around again. The family held a tiny, quiet party for her. Doba baked cupcakes and a cake, and Ajei hung out playing party games with Etan.

She’s growing up so fast…
And before their very eyes, Ajei had grown up into quite the optimistic teenager (though she was ironically very interested in emo culture, and anything surrounding the occult.)

The world was (almost) her oyster.
